The focal dilemma at the heart of Bangladesh’s politics, or false dilemma?

“A nation cannot be separated from the its past; this is eminently true of the ‘Land of the Bengalis.” We must ask: Are the Bangladeshis Bengali first? Do they look to their shared cultural and linguistics past? Or are they Muslims first, Muslims who even after separation, retain a community of interests with Pakistan, especially with regard to India?”

He continues:

“We shall see that they can be either, depending on the circumstances.”

p. 1, Craig Baxter, Bangladesh, 1998.
